BCCI calls urgent meeting with Gautam Gambhir and Ajit Agarkar ahead of 2nd ODI against South Africa to discuss team performance and selection issues

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has called an urgent meeting with India head coach Gautam Gambhir, selection committee chief Ajit Agarkar, and key officials ahead of the second ODI against South Africa. The purpose is to address critical issues concerning team performance, selection consistency, and long-term development.

According to a Sportstar report, the meeting will include BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia and joint secretary Prabhtej Singh Bhatia alongside Gambhir and Agarkar. It remains unclear if the newly appointed BCCI president Mithun Manhas

will attend. The meeting is scheduled for match day, making it unlikely that senior players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, or others will participate.

A senior BCCI official revealed the meeting aims to ensure “selection consistency” while factoring in long-term player development and team performance improvements. The board seeks clarity on management tactics and future planning following India’s recent home Test series defeat against South Africa.

“During the home Test season, there have been instances of confusing tactics on and off the field. We want clarity and forward planning, especially with the next Test series eight months away,” said the official.

With India favored to defend the T20 World Cup next year and being strong contenders for the subsequent ODI World Cup, the BCCI is keen to resolve these issues swiftly to maintain their competitive edge.

The situation also hints at communication gaps between management and senior players, particularly Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Rumors had circulated about the BCCI wanting Kohli to reconsider his Test retirement, but he quashed such speculation following the Ranchi ODI.
