Kane Williamson to Make Comeback for New Zealand in England ODI Series

Kane Williamson to Make Comeback for New Zealand in England ODI Series
New Zealand fans have a reason to cheer as veteran batsman Kane Williamson is all set to return to international cricket in the three-match ODI series against England, starting October 26. The series will be played at Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui, which is Williamson’s home ground, adding a special touch to his highly anticipated comeback.
Absence Due to Medical Issue and Recent Engagements
The 35-year-old Williamson has been sidelined from the ongoing T20I series against England due to a “minor medical issue” that kept him off the field for the past month. Holding a casual contract with New Zealand Cricket (NZC), Williamson had opted out of the T20I series against Australia and the recent Zimbabwe tour to prioritize his commitments in county cricket with Middlesex and The Hundred.
Adding to his cricketing roles, Williamson has also accepted a strategic advisory position with the Lucknow Super Giants in the Indian Premier League (IPL), showcasing his growing involvement off the field.
Nathan Smith Returns to Bolster the Squad
Alongside Williamson, all-rounder Nathan Smith has also returned to the national squad after recovering from an abdominal injury sustained during the first Test against Zimbabwe in August. Smith hasn’t featured in competitive cricket since but is now declared fully fit, ready to contribute in the demanding international schedule ahead.
Head Coach Rob Walter Expresses Optimism
New Zealand head coach Rob Walter expressed delight at the return of both players. “Kane and Nathan have had to work hard to overcome their respective injuries and illness. We all know what Kane means to the Blackcaps - having his skill, experience, and leadership back in the group is fantastic,” Walter said.
He also added praise for Nathan Smith, highlighting the all-rounder’s skills and fielding abilities despite being relatively new to international cricket.
Other Squad Updates
Mitchell Santner, who recently led New Zealand to the Champions Trophy final and has been recovering from an abdominal injury, will continue as captain for the ODI series. Several key players, including Finn Allen (foot), Lockie Ferguson (hamstring), Adam Milne (ankle), Will O’Rourke (back), Glenn Phillips (groin), and Ben Sears (hamstring), remain sidelined due to injuries creating opportunities for fresh faces in the squad.
Tom Latham also returns to take up wicketkeeping duties after recovering from a left shoulder injury. This ODI series will mark a significant phase as veterans and fresh talents combine for New Zealand's engagements at home.
