McCullum hints Harry Brook could be England’s Ashes vice-captain

McCullum hints Harry Brook could be vice-captain for the Ashes
England head coach Brendon McCullum says the team will discuss the Test vice-captain role this week. He hinted that Harry Brook could be picked as Ben Stokes’ deputy for the Ashes in Australia. Ollie Pope is the current vice-captain and has captained England five times, but McCullum said no final talk has happened yet about the role.
Harry Brook has impressed the coaches with his calm style and clear communication. He has also led the limited-overs side this year. McCullum said titles are not everything—players can lead even without a badge—and called Brook a natural leader who keeps things simple and connects well with the group.
Ollie Pope remains an important player at No. 3, but there is competition. Youngster Jacob Bethell had a strong 2024 and will captain England’s T20I side in Ireland. McCullum said selection calls will be taken closer to the first Ashes Test and hinted Pope is likely the back-up wicketkeeper behind Jamie Smith on tour.
England’s Ashes squad looks settled. The staff are weighing the second spinner slot behind Shoaib Bashir, with Rehan Ahmed, Liam Dawson, and Jack Leach in the frame. England could travel with up to seven fast bowlers for the five Tests. Mark Wood’s fitness is still a question after knee surgery. A new seam-bowling consultant will be named for the Ashes, as Tim Southee will be unavailable. McCullum will skip the Ireland tour to recharge before the Ashes preparation begins.
McCullum said the group wants to block out noise and focus on one series at a time. He called the Ashes a huge challenge in Australian conditions but believes England have the players and depth to compete hard.
