Shreyas Iyer Out of ICU After Near-Fatal Injury, Health Still "Delicate But Stable"

India’s ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has been moved out of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at a Sydney hospital after suffering a life-threatening injury during the third ODI against Australia. Although out of immediate danger, his medical condition is still considered "delicate but stable," according to multiple reports and a BCCI statement.

What Happened in Sydney

Iyer sustained a laceration to his spleen after landing awkwardly on his left side while completing a spectacular backward running catch to dismiss Alex Carey. The impact led to internal bleeding—a situation that escalated quickly after Iyer fainted in the dressing room and displayed alarmingly low vital signs. The Indian team’s medical staff acted swiftly, rushing him to hospital, where scans confirmed the extent of the damage.

Hospital Stay and Recovery

Though Iyer was moved out of the ICU on Monday, doctors are keeping him under close observation for infection and other complications. He is expected to remain hospitalized for around seven days. The BCCI also confirmed he is under the constant care of the traveling Indian team doctor, with his progress monitored daily in consultation with specialists from both Sydney and India.

Friends and a family member are expected to travel to Sydney as soon as possible, as visa processes allow, to be with the 30-year-old batsman. The medical team’s rapid response, coupled with early intervention, is credited with preventing a potentially fatal outcome.

Injury Impact and Team Concerns

Iyer’s health scare puts his participation in the upcoming home ODI series against South Africa, scheduled for November 30, in serious doubt. His absence will be deeply felt given his consistent form: this year alone, he has amassed 496 runs in 11 matches at an average close to 50, including a Champions Trophy campaign where he was India’s top scorer.

Official Statement from the BCCI

The BCCI said in a statement:
“Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region while fielding during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney. Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his injury status. The Indian Team Doctor will remain in Sydney with Shreyas to evaluate his day-to-day progress.”

A Delicate Road Ahead

While the worst seems to have passed, Iyer’s full recovery will be gradual and closely managed. Fans, teammates, and the entire Indian cricket fraternity are hoping for his smooth and swift return to action.
