Suryakumar Yadav clears fitness test, set for India Asia Cup 2025 squad

Suryakumar Yadav Clears Fitness Test, Boosts India Ahead of Asia Cup Squad Selection
India’s T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav has passed his fitness assessment at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, giving Team India a major boost as selectors gear up to announce the squad for the Asia Cup 2025. The tournament will be held in the UAE from September 9 to 28, with India opening their campaign against the hosts on September 10.
Road to recovery
Yadav underwent surgery for a sports hernia in June at a clinic in Munich, Germany, and the recent fitness clearance marks a smooth progression in his recovery journey. The BCCI confirmed that passing the mandatory Return to Play (RTP) fitness tests was a prerequisite for his participation in upcoming tournaments.
Sharing an update on his recovery, Yadav penned on Instagram:
"Life Update: Underwent surgery for a sports hernia in the lower-right abdomen. Grateful to share that after a smooth surgery, I’m already on the road to recovery. Can’t wait to be back."
IPL heroics and recent form
The 34-year-old stylish batter was among the standout performers in IPL 2025, amassing 717 runs, becoming only the second player after Sachin Tendulkar to cross 600 runs for the Mumbai Indians in a single season. He narrowly missed out on the Orange Cap, finishing behind Gujarat Titans' Sai Sudharsan (759 runs). Yadav's contributions propelled MI to the playoffs, highlighted by a knockout win against Gujarat and a hard-fought defeat to Punjab Kings.
Post-IPL, Suryakumar also showcased impressive form in the T20 Mumbai League, representing Triumph Knights Mumbai North East, where he scored 122 runs in five innings.
Impact on Asia Cup prospects
With fitness doubts looming earlier, Yadav's clearance will boost his chances of selection for the Asia Cup squad, which will face crucial matches including the marquee India-Pakistan clash on September 14 in Dubai. His experience and in-form batting will be invaluable for India’s middle inning stability and power hitting in the shortest international format ahead of the 2026 T20 World Cup.
Injury history and fitness management
This is not Yadav’s first recent surgery; he had earlier undergone ankle surgery in 2023, and managing fitness remains paramount with India’s packed cricketing calendar. The BCCI and team management are expected to monitor his workload carefully to ensure sustained peak performance without risking injury relapse.
Looking forward
The selection committee, chaired by Ajit Agarkar, will convene in Mumbai soon to finalise India’s Asia Cup squad. With Suryakumar passing the RTP tests and likely back in contention, Team India could field one of its strongest units to defend their Asia Cup glory in UAE.
India kick off their campaign against UAE on September 10, with the high-voltage India-Pakistan fixture scheduled for September 14, setting the stage for a pivotal tournament ahead of the home T20 World Cup in 2026.
Suryakumar’s return from injury and fitness reassurance offer India not just a boost in firepower but a testament to the resilience required at elite levels of modern cricket.
