Yashasvi Jaiswal has made his goals very clear: he wants to play the T20 World Cup and one day captain India, but he is also happy to wait, learn and grow behind some of the biggest names in the game.

Jaiswal’s T20 World Cup dream

Jaiswal said that playing the T20 World Cup for India is one of his main dreams. He explained that while the goal is always in his mind, he is trying to focus on his cricket, keep improving and wait for the right time rather than getting restless. Right now, Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma are the first-choice opening pair in T20Is, so he knows he has to grab chances whenever they come.

He also shared his captaincy ambition very openly. When asked if he sees himself leading India one day, Jaiswal said that if he gets the chance, he would love to captain the national team. It shows he is already thinking about responsibility and leadership, not just his own runs.

Place in the team across formats

At the moment, Jaiswal is properly settled only in Test cricket, where he opens with KL Rahul and has become an important part of the top order. In ODIs and T20Is, his position is not fixed because India have many options. In 50-over cricket, the presence of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli at the top makes it very hard for him to claim a permanent opening slot.

Even with this, Jaiswal is not frustrated. He understands that competition is strong and that timing matters. Instead of complaining about limited chances, he is focusing on making himself a better player and staying ready whenever the team needs him.

Learning from Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli

Jaiswal spoke very warmly about what it is like to share the dressing room with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. He said that when “Ro‑Ko” are around, younger players benefit a lot because they keep talking about the game, sharing experiences, and explaining how to handle different situations. For Jaiswal, they are a big source of inspiration because of the intensity and consistency with which they have won matches for India.

He also gave a nice example from the third ODI. Rohit told him to relax, stay calm and take his time, promising that he (Rohit) would take the risks instead. Jaiswal said, “How many people will do that?” Similarly, he shared that Virat gave him small targets during the chase and told him they would have to finish the game themselves. These moments show why he feels relaxed and confident when they are around.

Balancing ambition and patience

Jaiswal is trying to balance big goals with patience. On one side, he wants to play the T20 World Cup 2026 and even dreams of captaining India in the future. On the other side, he accepts the current pecking order, keeps learning from seniors and focuses on his own game. For India, that is a healthy sign: a young top-order batter with strong ambition, but also respect for the process and the legends he is sharing the dressing room with.
