Yashasvi Jaiswal Turns 'Doctor' After Shubman Gill Suffers Nasty Collision in India vs West Indies 2nd Test

Yashasvi Jaiswal dominated Day 1 of the second India vs West Indies Test with a magnificent unbeaten 173, but it was his impromptu role as team 'doctor' that stole hearts toward the end of play. After captain Shubman Gill suffered a nasty collision with West Indies wicketkeeper Tevin Imlach at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi, Jaiswal immediately stepped in to perform a concussion check on his teammate—a heartwarming moment that went viral on social media.

The Collision Scare

The incident occurred late in the day's play when Gill collided with Imlach while attempting a quick single. Both players appeared uncomfortable following the clash, with team physios rushing onto the field to assess the situation. Television cameras captured Jaiswal carefully performing a basic concussion test, holding up fingers and asking Gill to count them—a simple but crucial check for head injuries.

The sight of the 23-year-old opener taking charge and showing care for his captain perfectly encapsulated the camaraderie within this young Indian side. Fortunately, both Gill and Imlach were able to continue after brief medical attention, with the Indian skipper finishing unbeaten on 20 alongside Jaiswal at stumps.

Jaiswal's Batting Masterclass

While his medical intervention grabbed headlines, Jaiswal's primary contribution came with the bat. The left-hander batted through the entire day, facing 253 balls and striking 19 fours and four sixes in an innings that put India in complete command at 318/2.

This was Jaiswal's seventh Test century in just his 26th match, continuing his remarkable rise since debuting with 171 against West Indies in 2023. What makes his achievement even more special is that five of his seven Test hundreds have exceeded 150 runs—only the legendary Don Bradman (8) has scored more 150+ scores before turning 23.

Record-Breaking Day

Jaiswal became only the second player after Virat Kohli to score 150+ runs on the opening day of a Test match in India on multiple occasions. Remarkably, both players achieved this feat at the same two venues—Visakhapatnam and Delhi. Kohli scored 151 vs England in Vizag (2016) and 156 vs Sri Lanka in Delhi (2017), while Jaiswal registered 179 vs England in Vizag (2024) and now 173* in Delhi.

Sudharsan's Near-Miss

Jaiswal's dominance was well-supported by Sai Sudharsan, who scored a career-best 87 before falling 13 runs short of a maiden Test century. The duo shared a crucial 193-run partnership for the second wicket that deflated West Indies' hopes after Jomel Warrican had dismissed KL Rahul (38) with a beautiful turning delivery that left the opener stumped.

Sudharsan's dismissal—trapped LBW by Warrican—brought Gill to the crease, and the captain-opener pair added an unbeaten 67 runs to close out the day.

West Indies' Struggles Continue

For West Indies, it was another day of toil in the field with little reward. Warrican was the only bowler to make breakthroughs, claiming both wickets that fell, but West Indies lacked the penetration to trouble India's batters on what appeared to be an excellent batting surface.

After suffering an innings-and-140-run defeat in the first Test at Ahmedabad, Roston Chase's side desperately needed early wickets but watched helplessly as Jaiswal and Sudharsan batted them out of the contest.

Looking Ahead

India are firmly positioned to push for a 2-0 series whitewash with Jaiswal eyeing a double century on Day 2. The young opener has several milestones within reach, and with Gill settled at the other end, India could be targeting a massive first-innings total of 450-500 to put the match beyond West Indies' reach.

For Gill, after passing his concussion check courtesy of 'Dr. Jaiswal,' he'll be hoping to convert his start into a substantial score and lead India to an emphatic series victory on home soil.
